How to record a meeting on iPhone
Whether you're sitting in a conference room or jumping on a Zoom call, your iPhone can capture every word automatically. Here's exactly how to do it with Noter AI.
Updated June 2026
Two ways to record: on-device audio vs. the meeting bot
Noter AI handles two very different recording scenarios, and which one you use depends on whether your meeting is in-person or virtual.
In-person meetings — someone talking across the table, a lecture, a client visit — use on-device recording. Your iPhone microphone picks up the room, and the audio stays on your device until you're ready to transcribe.
Virtual meetings on Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, or Webex use a different approach: a smart bot joins the call on your behalf. The bot records the call audio directly from the platform, so you don't have to share your screen, mute yourself, or leave your iPhone microphone open for the entire meeting.
You don't need to choose upfront — both options live in the same app.
How to record an in-person meeting on iPhone
This uses the microphone built into your iPhone or iPad. The recording runs in the background, so your screen can lock without interrupting anything.
- 1Open Noter AI on your iPhone.
- 2Tap the + button or the record button on the main screen.
- 3Tap Start Recording. A live timer confirms it's running.
- 4Put your phone on the table face-down or lock the screen — recording continues in the background.
- 5When the meeting ends, tap Stop. Noter AI will upload the audio and begin transcription.
- 6Your transcript appears with speaker labels and timestamps. An AI summary and action items are generated automatically.
Quick-start options: Control Center, Siri, and shortcuts
If you don't want to open the app every time, there are faster ways to start.
Control Center widget — add the Noter AI widget to Control Center in your iPhone Settings. Then a single swipe-and-tap starts a recording from anywhere, even the lock screen.
Siri shortcut — set up a shortcut so you can say 'Hey Siri, start a meeting note' and recording begins hands-free. Useful when you're walking into a room.
Both options feed into the same transcription pipeline — you'll find the recording in your notes list when you open the app.
How to record a virtual meeting using the bot
The bot works with Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, and Webex. It joins as a participant and records the call, so you get clean audio even if you're on a noisy commute.
- 1Open Noter AI and tap New Note or the bot icon.
- 2Tap Join a virtual meeting.
- 3Option A — paste a link: Copy your Zoom/Teams/Meet/Webex invite link and paste it into the field, then tap Send Bot.
- 4Option B — use your calendar: Connect your Google or Outlook calendar inside Settings. Noter AI will list your upcoming meetings. Tap the one you want and hit Send Bot.
- 5The bot joins the call a few seconds before it starts. You'll see it appear in the participants list.
- 6When the call ends, the bot leaves automatically. Transcription starts within minutes.
- 7Open the note in Noter AI to read the transcript, review the AI summary, and check your action items.
Importing audio you already have
Already recorded something in Voice Memos, or received an audio file? You can import it directly.
From the Voice Memos app (or any app that shares audio files), tap Share, then choose Noter AI from the share sheet. The file imports and transcription begins automatically.
You can also tap Import inside the app and pick a file from your Files app.
What you get after recording
Every recording — in-person or virtual — produces the same set of outputs automatically:
A full transcript with speaker labels and timestamps, synced to playback so you can tap any line to hear that moment. An executive summary plus a detailed analysis. Auto-extracted action items with assignees pulled from the conversation. Everything is stored encrypted and syncs to your other devices.
- Speaker-labeled transcript with synced audio playback
- Executive summary + detailed AI analysis
- Action items with assignees, extracted automatically
- Export as PDF, Word (.docx), or plain text
- Encrypted storage, synced across your iPhone and iPad
Frequently asked questions
Can I record a meeting on iPhone without the other person knowing?
Recording consent laws vary by location — always check your local rules. The bot joins as a visible participant, and the app records through your microphone openly. It's your responsibility to inform participants when required.
Does the recording work with the screen locked?
Yes. On-device recording runs in the background even when your iPhone screen is off. You'll see a live indicator in the status bar.
Which virtual meeting platforms does the bot support?
Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, and Webex — all four.
Is the audio stored on my phone or in the cloud?
Audio is recorded on-device first, then processed in the cloud for transcription and AI summaries. Everything is encrypted in transit and at rest.
Do I need a subscription to use these features?
Yes. Noter AI offers one plan that includes everything — on-device recording, the meeting bot, AI transcription, summaries, and action items. It's $9.99/month or $49.99/year.
