What is Otter.ai?

Otter.ai is a cloud-based meeting assistant, primarily designed for desktop and web use. Its standout feature is OtterPilot, a bot that automatically joins your Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or Google Meet calls and produces a live, real-time transcript as people speak.

Otter's free plan gives you 300 minutes per month with a 30-minute cap per meeting and only 3 lifetime file imports, fairly tight for regular use. Paid plans run $16.99/month for Pro or $30/month for Business (as of 2026, billed monthly; annual billing cuts the Pro rate to roughly $8.33/month).

Why look for an Otter alternative?

A few common friction points push users to look elsewhere:

Language support is narrow. Otter transcribes in only 6 languages: English (US and UK), Spanish, French, German, Japanese, and Chinese Simplified. It works in one language per recording (French and English together is the one exception). If you work in Arabic, Portuguese, Korean, Turkish, or most other languages, Otter can't help.

Your data trains Otter's models. Transcription happens on Otter's servers, and Otter's privacy page says it trains its own models on user data after de-identifying it, with no opt-out given on that page. Enterprise workspaces are opted out by default.

The free tier is very restrictive. Three lifetime file imports is a hard ceiling, not a monthly reset. Once you hit it, you're locked out of importing unless you upgrade.

A consent lawsuit. An August 2025 class-action lawsuit alleged that Otter recorded meetings without proper consent disclosures, which raised concerns for some users.

Meeting bot coverage has gaps. OtterPilot covers Zoom, Teams, and Meet. If your team runs on Webex, Otter's support there is unclear and unverified as of 2026.

Where Otter is stronger

Otter fits a few specific needs.

Live transcription. Otter shows a transcript word-for-word during a live call, if you need to follow along in real time.

Slide capture. OtterPilot can capture slides shared during a Zoom or Teams meeting and attach them to the transcript.

Admin features. Otter's Business plan offers SSO, admin controls and shared team workspaces for larger rollouts.

Who should switch
